Why a panel or service should be assessed

Damage or concerning symptoms

Heat, burning odour, scorching, corrosion, water entry, unusual sound, physical damage or breakers that repeatedly trip require qualified assessment. Do not remove the panel cover or repeatedly reset a problem breaker.

Future electrical loads

EV charging, heat pumps, air conditioning, hot tubs, suites, workshops and renovations can change demand. The realistic future load list should be considered together before equipment is selected.

Space and serviceability

A panel may be in usable condition but have limited circuit space, poor labelling or equipment that is difficult to support. Those issues are different from a lack of service capacity.

Renovation or property planning

A defined renovation, insurance request, property assessment or repeated service history may justify documenting the existing distribution system before new work proceeds.

Four different electrical decisions

Repair the circuit or component

A tripping breaker or failed circuit does not automatically mean the panel must be replaced. Testing may identify an overload, connected-equipment problem, damaged conductor, loose connection or breaker fault.

Replace the panel at the existing rating

A same-rating replacement may address condition, equipment support or circuit space without increasing the electrical supply available to the property.

Manage or redistribute electrical load

A subpanel, circuit changes, measured-demand review or approved load-management strategy may support the intended use without defaulting to a larger utility service.

Upgrade the electrical service

When additional capacity is required, the project may involve the utility connection, meter base, service conductors, grounding and bonding, main equipment, feeders and connected distribution—not only the panel cabinet.

What determines scope and timing

Existing service arrangement

Overhead or underground supply, meter location, service rating, feeder routes, available fault information and the condition of accessible equipment affect the design and coordination path.

Permit authority

Electrical work requires the appropriate permit. Technical Safety BC issues permits in many areas, while Burnaby, Vancouver and several other municipalities manage their own electrical permitting.

Utility and shutdown coordination

Work affecting the service can require utility review, disconnection and reconnection, inspections and a planned outage. Timing depends on approvals, equipment and site access.

Access and finished condition

Panel size, working space, wall construction and conductor routes can affect surrounding finishes. PTX can coordinate suitable drywall and handyman completion when access work is part of the approved scope.

Separate immediate repairs from panel replacement, load management, subpanel work and a complete service upgrade so the proposal states the intended result clearly.

4. Permit, coordinate and complete

Confirm the permit authority, utility or engineering involvement, shutdown plan, installation scope, inspection path and any finishing work before the project proceeds.

What customers usually need to know

Does every older electrical panel need replacement?

No. Age is one factor. Condition, equipment support, recurring symptoms, available circuit space, present demand and future plans determine the useful next step.

Do I automatically need a 200-amp service?

No. The existing service, connected loads, proposed equipment and possible load-management options should be reviewed before choosing a rating.

Will replacing the panel increase my electrical capacity?

Not automatically. A panel can be replaced at the existing rating. Increasing available service capacity can require broader utility, metering, conductor, grounding, feeder and permit work.

Can a panel upgrade stop a breaker from tripping?

Only if the upgrade addresses the actual cause. Repeated trips can result from overload, circuit or equipment faults, connections or the breaker itself, so diagnosis comes first.

Is a permit required?

Panel replacement and service-upgrade work require the appropriate electrical permit. The issuing authority depends on the municipality or Technical Safety BC jurisdiction.

Can PTX repair the wall around the new equipment?
