The need

The visit began with concerns about kitchen and garage receptacles, including a garage GFCI that was not working and would not reset. Two other receptacles were inspected for wiring and connection problems.

PTX's approach

PTX removed the two receptacles and inspected the splices and wires for visible damage. The recorded wire test passed. The receptacles were reinstalled and voltage was checked. For the faulty GFCI, the supply wires showed proper voltage, which identified the device as the problem. PTX installed a new GFCI receptacle and explained which receptacles were on the same breaker, including why appliances with a large current draw should not be used on the same circuit.

The recorded result

The inspected splices were recorded as good, with no visible wire damage noted. The two receptacles were reinstalled, and proper voltage was recorded. The replacement garage GFCI was tested and recorded as working properly.

What this job helps another property owner consider

If a GFCI will not work or reset, the device itself may be the problem, but the surrounding wiring and supply should still be checked rather than assuming a replacement is all that is needed. This job also shows why it is useful to understand which receptacles share a breaker before operating appliances with a large current draw.
