Documented field work
Installation details and completed work

The need
The service call covered a master bathroom and kitchen. In the bathroom, the GFCI had no voltage and would not reset. One light bulb was not working, while another bathroom bulb was flickering. In the kitchen, two under-cabinet lights had stopped working.
PTX's approach
The broken GFCI was disconnected and removed, and a new GFCI was installed. The replacement was tested and recorded as working properly when the light switch was on. The wiring arrangement was also noted: the wire ran from the light switch to the device box, where it was spliced to continue to the light, so voltage was present at the GFCI when the switch was turned on. For the lighting, bulbs from working fixtures were used for testing. The bathroom fixture was removed so its wires and connections could be inspected; those were recorded as good.
The recorded result
The replacement GFCI was working properly after installation. Testing showed that the non-working bathroom light was caused by a burnt-out bulb. The other bathroom bulb was also identified as burnt out or nearing failure based on the testing record. The two kitchen under-cabinet lights worked when tested with working bulbs, indicating that their original bulbs were burnt out. The work record suggested replacing all the light bulbs: eight G9 bulbs for the two bathrooms and six G4 bulbs for the under-cabinet lights.
What this job helps another property owner consider
When a GFCI and several lights are not working, the devices and bulbs may not share the same cause. This documented Kitsilano visit involved a GFCI replacement, fixture inspection and bulb testing before the lighting recommendation was made. For a similar electrical service call, it is practical to have each affected device and light checked separately rather than treating every symptom as one problem.
