Separate condition from capacity
Condition asks whether the existing equipment and connections are safe and serviceable. Capacity asks whether the service, feeders, panel and circuits can support present and proposed electrical demand. A property can have a capacity problem without visible damage, or damaged equipment even when calculated demand is modest.
A useful assessment records the equipment, visible condition, known symptoms, panel space, existing loads and the additions the owner is actually considering.
Conditions that need prompt review
Stop and arrange qualified assessment if the panel is hot, scorched, damaged, wet, corroded or producing unusual odours or sounds. Repeated trips should also be diagnosed rather than bypassed or repeatedly reset.
Do not remove the cover or work inside energized equipment. Keep the area accessible, dry and clear of stored materials, and tell the electrician about leaks, recent work or intermittent symptoms.

Panel replacement versus service upgrade
Replacing the distribution panel does not automatically increase the utility service or feeder capacity. A panel replacement can address condition, space or equipment issues while leaving the service rating unchanged.
